From 17 August - 19 August 2022, SBSA sent the first ever Baseball5 (Open) Team to represent Singapore at the inaugural WBSC Asia Cup Baseball5 hosted by the Softball Association of Malaysia at the Berjaya Times Square Hotel in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
Newly introduced by the WBSC in 2017 with the desire of increasing accessibility to baseball/softball by eliminating their structural complexities while maintaining the uniqueness of the game, Baseball5 is a fast-paced, five-on-five, five-inning mixed-gender street version baseball/softball that can be played anywhere.
The Singapore Baseball5 Team comprised a diverse mix of players of various ages, backgrounds, and experience levels which reflected the sport's accessibility. Helmed by Captain Daniel Tam and Vice-Captain Edward Goh, these unique and dedicated individuals came together and trained under challenging conditions leading up to the tournament.
In KL, the team secured a historic first win against Pakistan in the Opening Round to proceed to the Super Round. Thereafter, they competed tooth and nail and missed out on a top 4 finish in the game with Team Hong Kong. Team Singapore closed out the competition in 6th place, finishing in strong form with an exciting game with Team Malaysia.
The team would like to thank Softball Association of Malaysia for making this groundbreaking event possible, as well as our sponsor and those who have helped us along our journey. We would also like to extend our gratitude to our supporters, families, and friends old and new who have pushed us to greater heights. We will be back!
